Sand Creek Road begins in southwestern Colusa County five miles west of the town of Arbuckle. The road begins at 315' elevation and climbs approximately 12 miles to 1300' where it crests before dropping down into Yolo County and the Cache Creek drainage. Starting from a short stretch of almond orchard, the vegetation quickly turns to oak savannah transitioning to oak woodland into chaparral - gray pine interspersed with riparian influenced habitats. The road begins with poor asphalt and then becomes dirt. Traffic along the road is usually very light, so stopping to check out sightings is favorable.

Target species for this area include: Lewis's Woodpecker, Golden Eagle, Greater Roadrunner, Bell's Sparrow, Rock Wren, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, California Thrasher, Yellow-billed Magpie, and Loggerhead Shrike. Bring snacks, lunch, and water. High-clearance vehicles are recommended, and carpooling is mandatory to keep the number of vehicles to a minimum.
